According to the Los Angeles Wave newspaper, the Los Angeles Avengers have signed a new quarterback to their roster.

Occidental College quarterback Andy Collins has signed a three-year contract with the L.A. Avengers of the Arena Football League.

Collins was a three-time Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference offensive player of the year and an NCAA Division III All-American in 2006. He averaged 273.1 yards in total offense per game as a senior.

He participated in the New York Giants mini-camp in May as an unsigned free agent.

It isn't clear yet how much playing time Collins might receive behind Sonny Cumbie (who isn't signed yet for the 2008 season as far as I know) and Tim Hicks.

The kickoff game of the 2008 Arena Football League season will be on Leap Day: February 29th. The New Orleans VooDoo will be zapping into LA to take on the Los Angeles Avengers. Fans look forward to the matchup, taking place in Staples Center at 7:30pm.

The Avengers ended the 2007 season with a 9-7 record and a playoff berth. The VooDoo were 5-11 but also set AFL records with 13,000 season tickets sold during the 2007 season. That support helped bring the 2008 Arena Bowl to New Orleans, and we suspect the VooDoo will be much more competitive this season.
